Staying Safe with Epilepsy This Summer

3 Jul 2025

Summer brings sunshine, travel and outdoor fun. But for people with epilepsy, it can also come with extra risks. Heat, dehydration and changes in routine can all impact seizure activity. That’s why we created this simple guide to help you or your loved ones enjoy the season safely and confidently.

Whether you’re heading to the beach, going for a hike, travelling or just spending time outside, here are the 8 key things to know.

1. Stay Cool: Heat Can Be a Seizure Trigger

Overheating can increase the risk of seizures. This means it is important to take steps to keep your body temperature regulated such as:

  • Avoid direct sun between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM;

  • Stay in shaded or air-conditioned spaces whenever possible;

  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing;

  • Use cooling accessories like mist sprays or neck towels.

Tip: If you feel dizzy, flushed or overly tired in the heat, find a shaded place, hydrate and rest immediately.

2. Hydration Is Critical

Dehydration is one of the most overlooked seizure triggers in summer. Make it a priority to drink water regularly throughout the day.

  • Aim for at least 6–8 glasses of water daily (more if you’re sweating or active);

  • Add electrolyte drinks on especially hot or active days;

  • Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate the body.

3. Be Cautious with Sunlight and Flickering Lights

People with photosensitive epilepsy should take extra precautions in sunny conditions:

  • Wear polarized sunglasses;

  • Avoid reflections from water or windows;

  • Don’t stare at flickering or flashing lights (e.g. during concerts, near pools);

  • Take regular breaks in dim or shaded areas.

Reminder: Not everyone with epilepsy is photosensitive, but it’s best to avoid light-related stress on your nervous system.

4. Swim Smart: Water Safety Tips

Swimming is great summer fun, but it comes with specific risks for people with epilepsy. The good news: you can still swim with proper planning.

  • Try to avoid swimming alone;

  • Let friends or lifeguards know you have epilepsy;

  • Wear a bright-colored swim cap for visibility;

  • Stick to shallow water if seizures are not well controlled.

An accompanied swim is far safer than avoiding the water altogether.

5. Plan Ahead for Travel

If you’re traveling this summer, a little planning goes a long way:

  • Pack extra medication in your carry-on bag;

  • Bring a copy of your seizure action plan and make sure to carry it around;

  • Research local hospitals or emergency contacts at your destination;

  • Adjust your medication schedule gradually if changing time zones;

  • Set reminders or alarms to stay on track.

6. Always Be Emergency-Ready

Even with all precautions, it’s vital to be ready for the unexpected.

  • Wear a medical ID bracelet or necklace;

  • Share your seizure action plan with at least one travel companion or friend;

  • Make sure at least one person around you knows how to respond to a seizure.

7. Empower Your Circle: Talk About It

Don’t be afraid to talk about your condition. The more your friends, family or coworkers know, the more they can support you.

  • Explain what your seizures look like and what to look our for;

  • Tell them what to do if a seizure happens;

  • Share links or tools that help them understand epilepsy.

Remember: knowledge builds safety and reduces fear!

8. Enjoy your Summer Safely and Freely

Epilepsy shouldn’t stop you from enjoying summer! With some preparation and open communication, you can embrace the season fully.
